UNIVERSITY OF NAPLES FEDERICO II

The University of Napoli Federico II (UNINA), is the oldest state university of the western world (generalis lictera issued by Frederick II Hohenstaufen, King of Sicily and Head of the Roman Empire, June 5th 1224). UNINA provides specific courses (Bachelor in Biomolecular and Industrial Biotechnology; Master in Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology; Master in Agro-Environmental and Food Biotechnology; PhD course in Industrial Biotechnology) to train new professional profiles to work within the bio-based goods and services industry. Recently, together with the Politecnico of Torino, the University of Napoli founded a Master degree in Industrial Chemistry for Circular Bioeconomy, an MSc course which aims to train figures with transversal skills in Industrial Chemistry, Biotechnology and Circular Bioeconomy, with professional training that will cover the new needs of the chemical industry. UNINA is also the National Contact Point and organizer of the Italian participation to the Bio-based Innovation Student Challenge Europe (BISC-E). UNINA, one of the founders of BIOCIRCE, strongly believes that novel and emerging bioeconomy approaches and new value chains will need new education and skills favoring the transition to a more ‘green’ and environmentally sustainable economy
TRAINING OBJECTIVES
Aim of the module is to provide updates regarding advanced technologies of industrial applications of enzyme catalysts and microbial cells as “cell factories”. The activities are focused on: i) the use of enzymes as additives and processes ancillaries for the production of products of industrial interest; ii) the use of advanced methods of microorganism engineering to improve production performances; iii) the strategies to optimize the exploitation of the productive potential of the microorganisms. The module will deal also with recognition and analysis of the opportunities available for a new venture, focusing in particular on the research entrepreneurial initiatives (academic and not) aimed at commercializing the research outcomes. The aim of the course is to equip learners with the theoretical and practical tools for the recognition and structuring of innovative business ideas.
